In the last few months, reports
after reports appear in the mainstream media and the online media. In the
social media, the users have uploaded stories of personal incidents involving
crime, which includes being attacked, being robbed or worse sometimes, being
killed.
We see a reaction from the Prime Minister
who tweeted on this and wrote an article on his blog on the propsed ways on
perceived high crime rates. PEMANDU even have recently requested that the media
do not sensationalize crime and instead report on solved crimes.
It is an absolute misconception that these
crimes and perceived high rate is nothing more than a “recent” event. The fact
is such crimes like snatch theft, smashed car glass at traffic lights, house
breaking and etc have happened over the years all over Malaysia. However, it
seems that the advent of the social media and the easy access to communication
tools, makes news of crime is easier to access to.
The key is that irrespective whether the
crime rate is “recent” or otherwise, the fact is that there is crime and it
hurts the victim and people close to the victim. There is a possibility that
there are a lot more crimes at the moment.
That aside, crimes must be detered, stopped and solved.
